yesterday we went to the Lonestar Roundup, and saw awesome classic cars. Then today Giles sang backing vocals for the new Peelander Z album. I guess we're settling in! W00t!

What is your earliest vivid memory? Why do you think this memory stands out so much in your mind?

My earliest vivid memory is just a little flash from my second Christmas. I am an August baby, so I would have been about 15 months. I remember my mom had on a deep green maxi skirt and a white blouse. I remember that she was very tall and her face was far away; I was just beginning to walk, so I was probably standing in front of her. I remember when my maternal grandmother arrived, and that at some point, she complained that her girdle was too tight.

My next memory is from a little bit later. I think when I was two. I was alone with my dad, and he was getting me ready for the day. I had a favorite dress, made of a soft chambray that was red instead of blue, and trimmed with black rick-rack. We put that dress on me, some tights maybe. Then it was time for breakfast, and I ate cheerios with chocolate milk off a blue enameled picnic plate that was divided into three sections. I remember feeling really happy, contented and well looked after. I also remember that being alone with my dad was kind of a novelty. I think my mom might have been in the hospital, having my next sibling.

Subject:Today I cooked some rice, and wrote about it ungramatically.
Security:Public

Made a big assed pot of fried rice, with some jasmine rice I found in the cupboard. I added the meat from some leftover ribs we had the other night, some leftover beef of some kind (I won't dignify it by calling it steak), cut up a couple of zuchinni squash, half a bag of those baby carrots that I persist in buying for my son even though he does not eat them, and added also some broccoli and some green beans that were not too wilted. I also added like 5 scrambled eggs and some slivered almonds that I toasted in the pan. It's seasoned with some soy sauce, some 'classic stir fry sauce' that I found in the cupboard, some kind of flavored pepper salt blend and a very light sprinkling of crushed red peppers from the last time we had pizza.

I am very proud of this dish. Even though fried rice is (as far as I know) traditionally made from leftovers, it still requires good timing and a light touch with the stir frying to keep it from turning into an inedible mess.

The cook also needs to beware of both underseasoning and overseasoning as she is cooking. Too much oil, and not enough flavor makes it greasy and uninteresting, but too much makes it taste like a stir fry gone wrong.

I like the seasoning to be strong enough to unify the dish as a whole, but also to allow the flavor of each individual ingredient to come forth.

For me, the secret to making a good plate of fried rice is in how the rice is cooked. It's better to make it with rice that has been cooked the day before (or even a few days before) and allowed to cool. Additionally, it's better to use rice that was allowed to retain a certain al dente quality. This way, it doesn't get all gloopy when you go to reheat it.

Also, I prefer to cook all of my other ingredients separately, and then add them together in the end. This way, you don't end up with undercooked broccoli and carrots, but over cooked zuchini. cooking the vegetables and meats properly allows you to respect each ingredient's cooking time.

Finally, it's better to add the seasoning just as you're getting ready to plate up. That way, you can really get a sense of which spices in what quantities to add.

Dear Lord, today I was driving the man-cub home from school and some ska song came on the radio with a rather catchy tune, so I left it on but wasn't really listening to the words, and I guess I should have, because it was about some guy who date-rapes a girl, and then gets SENT TO JAIL (Awesome wish filfillment, haha), and THEN gets Butt-raped. A new concept for my ten year old, but one that was introduced in a great fashion, at a great time because he was just about to leave for the school campout, and is hosting a sleepover in his tent, and I know there is NO WAY HE WILL BE ABLE TO KEEP SOMETHING LIKE BUTT_RAPE TO HIMSELF, especially since he will probably be totally high from all the fucking s'mores he is gonna eat.

Movie night with the ten year old: nothing as good as getting your movie titles mixed up and getting a guy sitting behind the wheel of his car shouting "FUCK FUCK FUCK" in the first 30 seconds, especially when you're expecting a lighthearted fantasy movie. Ink is NOT the same as Inkheart, apparently.

I hate going to my son's school assembly on Friday. I always feel as though nobody likes me. Because nobody does, ahahaha. Fuck them. I have a cold and my mood is very bleak. I wish it wasn't so hard for me to make friends. I am very cross with myself for my lack of social sklz. Jeez. Anyway, I was really upset earlier, but have managed to talk myself out of it, and I guess that is a plus.

Si is running his first marathon today. Just saw him at mile 4, looking fresh and happy. He is wearing his mom's cross, Giles' England Shirt (yes it is big on Giles), and a wristband for a little girl in Giles's class (she has leukemia). I'm about to jet round to mile 15 and see if we can catch him there.

He's been working toward this day for a very long time. All his life maybe.

Last week I went to a conference for continuing education for mental health professionals. I attended a seminar on workplace bullying, one on domestic violence, and another where I got to watch a video of someone doing an actual suicide intervention. Then today I went to a study group on trauma, that I will be attending for the next year or so. We watched a a wonderful film about the terrible things that happen to the brain when a child is sexually abused. The purpose of the workshop is to learn how to treat these survivors. I should feel depressed and wiped out, but I actually feel pleasantly challenged, energized and excited. Which I suppose indicates that I am on the right path. What I need to do now is keep my eye on the prize.

John Mayer cracks me up. I guess he's kind of a douche, but I think most men are anyway, and at least he's funny about it. also, that Tiger Wood's crack was spot on.

I haven't thought about this poem for years. It is one of the best descriptions of depression, ever.

Stephen Crane

In the Desert

"In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
Who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.
I said, "Is it good, friend?"
"It is bitter – bitter", he answered,
"But I like it
Because it is bitter,
And because it is my heart."

"“I celebrate this award with all the Preciouses, with all the Marys — I celebrate this award with every person that’s ever been touched,” Mo’nique offered during a triumphant acceptance speech at Sunday’s 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards. “It’s now time to tell. And it’s okay.”
